Course overview
From Government to Private: The Doctor’s Transition Toolkit supports doctors moving from community service, government, hospital, or registrar training into independent private practice in South Africa. It provides practical guidance for the professional, ethical, and operational challenges of this transition.
The programme covers five core areas: the transition mindset and resilience; communication and patient expectations; clinical practice and medico-legal safety; ethics, POPIA, and digital care; and business and practice operations.
Through case-based learning, reflection, and assessment, participants develop tools to strengthen clinical decisions, documentation, patient relationships, and practice systems. The aim is to build confidence, support safe and ethical care, and lay the foundations for a sustainable career in private practice.
Accredited by The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA).
Accreditation number: MDB014/086/11/2025. 15 General + 3 Ethics CEUs.

Why choose this course?
Medical school teaches you how to diagnose and treat patients. It does not teach you how to navigate the psychological, operational, ethical, financial, communication, and medico-legal realities of independent private practice.
This programme bridges that gap.
Unlike traditional courses that focus solely on billing, coding, or practice setup, this course provides a comprehensive framework for transitioning safely and confidently into private practice. Participants gain practical tools to manage patient expectations, communicate effectively, reduce medico-legal risk, build sustainable systems, understand private-sector operations, and develop the resilience required for long-term professional success.
The course is grounded in real-world private-practice experience and is specifically tailored to the South African healthcare environment, providing immediately applicable strategies that can be implemented from the first day of independent practice.

Course developer
Dr Bianca Bonita Crook is a South African General Practitioner, educator, and healthcare entrepreneur with extensive experience across both public and private healthcare sectors.
She completed a Bachelor of Science in Human Life Sciences at Stellenbosch University (2007–2009) before obtaining her MBChB degree from Stellenbosch University (2010–2015). She completed her internship training at Groote Schuur Hospital (2016–2017) and community service at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital (2018–2019), where she gained experience across a broad range of medical and paediatric disciplines.
Following community service, Dr Crook worked as a locum doctor before establishing her own private general practice in November 2019. As the owner and operator of a successful multidisciplinary private practice, she has firsthand experience in the clinical, operational, ethical, financial, communication, and medico-legal challenges associated with transitioning into independent practice.
Dr Crook has furthered her professional development through the completion of an Advanced Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine and a Postgraduate Diploma in General Practice. Her interests include medical education, professional development, healthcare systems, patient communication, practice management, and the integration of technology into modern healthcare.
Drawing on her own journey from medical student to private practitioner and practice owner, Dr Crook developed *From Government to Private: The Doctor's Transition Toolkit* to address a significant gap in medical training: preparing doctors not only to practise medicine, but to successfully navigate the realities of independent professional practice.
