Course overview
Welcome to the Basic Life Support. Paediatric module.
In this module, you will cover the theory of Paediatric Basic Life Support (BLS), with a focus on infants and children. It is essential that you also attend a practical workshop to develop hands-on skills in paediatric CPR, the safe use of an AED in children, and the management of choking in infants and children.
This Paediatric BLS module is based on the latest international guidelines released at the end of 2025 and reflects current best practice in paediatric resuscitation.
What is the purpose of this module?
Cardiac arrest in infants and children is most commonly preceded by respiratory failure or shock. Early recognition and prompt, effective intervention can significantly improve survival and neurological outcomes. Every healthcare professional should therefore be prepared, knowledgeable, and competent to recognise paediatric respiratory distress, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest, and to initiate high-quality paediatric CPR without delay.
In this module, you will learn the theoretical principles of Paediatric BLS, including age-appropriate assessment, CPR techniques, AED use, and choking management. Practical skill development is a critical component and must be reinforced through hands-on training.
High-quality CPR is a key determinant of survival in paediatric cardiac arrest. Close attention to correct sequencing, technique, and minimal interruptions is essential, as these steps are deliberately designed to reduce time to effective chest compressions and optimise oxygen delivery during resuscitation.
