Course overview

Welcome to the Basic Life Support - Adult module. In this module, you will cover the theory of Adult BLS, and it is essential that you attend a workshop to practice the practical skills of Adult CPR, the use of an AED, and the management of a choking patient. This BLS module is based on the latest international American Heart Association and Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa guidelines released at the end of 2025.

What is the purpose of this module?

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death. Every healthcare professional should be prepared, knowledgeable, and competent to recognize respiratory and cardiovascular arrest and perform effective CPR. In this module, you will cover the theory of Adult BLS, and it is essential that you attend a workshop to practice the practical skills of Adult CPR, the use of an AED, and the management of a choking patient. Good quality CPR improves a patient’s chance of survival, and it is important to pay attention to the sequence and details of the steps of CPR, which are purposely designed to reduce the time lost from arrest to good quality compressions!
