Course overview

South Africa’s public health sector is under pressure. Frozen posts, underfunding, and administrative delays have created significant barriers, yet the demand for skilled doctors—particularly in underserved communities—remains urgent. While it can be disheartening to see newly qualified doctors facing unemployment after years of rigorous training, this moment also presents a unique opportunity to reimagine how healthcare is delivered. It’s a chance to take control of your career, serve your community, and build a sustainable, independent practice that reflects your values and aspirations.

Starting your own practice is not without its challenges. Rising costs, complex regulatory requirements, limited access to mentorship, and financial constraints are real concerns. However, with the right support, innovative thinking, and collaborative networks, it is entirely possible to create a fulfilling, patient-centred career that not only provides meaningful work for yourself but also helps to close the gaps left by a struggling system.

This course is designed to empower South African healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully manage and grow their own practices. Through a comprehensive exploration of the local healthcare context, managed care systems, personal leadership, team management, financial and strategic planning, operational management, and digital transformation, participants will be equipped to navigate the complexities of private practice with confidence. The course culminates in the development of a realistic, tailored action plan to improve or establish your practice.

Structured into eight modules, the course offers approximately six hours of learning per module, with engaging and interactive content that encourages reflection and practical application. Learning is assessed through seven modular quizzes and a final written assessment, with a pass mark of 70% required to earn 30 CPD points. This is more than a course—it’s a stepping stone to a more empowered, impactful future in healthcare.
