About the academic institution
The Association of Palliative Care Practitioners of South Africa (PALPRAC) is a non-profit established in 2018 by South African doctors trained in Palliative Medicine. It brings together providers from various medical fields, such as Family Medicine, Oncology, and Paediatrics, who share a commitment to personalised care for patients with serious illnesses.
Palliative Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team. Depending on the patient’s needs, this team may include doctors, nurses, social workers, spiritual counsellors, psychologists, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, and speech therapists.
In 2021, PALPRAC expanded to include trained professionals from all these disciplines, supporting its vision of ensuring access to quality Palliative Care for those in need.

Course Lessons

Course developer
A clinical oncologist from 2004 to 2014, Margie Venter transitioned to palliative care in 2016 after leaving private oncology practice. Since then, she has focused on clinical practice, palliative care volunteering and advocacy, as well as curriculum development and teaching in palliative care at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In 2018, Margie co-founded the Association of Palliative Care Practitioners of South Africa (PALPRAC), where she has held leadership roles, including Vice-Chair, Chair, and Clinical Lead.
