Welcome to the Cancer-related Neuropathic Pain: Identification, Assessment and Comprehensive Management course.

This focused course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to better understand, assess and manage neuropathic pain in patients with cancer. Each module will guide you toward specific learning outcomes, helping you build confidence in recognising neuropathic pain, differentiating it from other types of cancer-related pain, and applying both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management strategies.

About the academic institution

PALPRAC is a national network of healthcare professionals dedicated to improving quality of life for people living with serious illness. Founded in 2018, we bring together doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver compassionate, person-centred palliative care across South Africa. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, we equip multidisciplinary teams to relieve suffering, support dignity, and honour what matters most to patients and their families. We support healthcare professionals to be change agents in their own settings, and we engage with the wider health system to drive the changes needed to ensure everyone has access to quality palliative care. All healthcare professionals are welcome to join, with membership options to suit every role and level of experience.

Course developer

Clinical & Radiation Oncologist
Dr Colleen Cox

Dr Colleen Cox is a clinical and radiation oncologist, specifically now working in palliative oncology. Her qualifications include MBBCh in 1994, FC Rad Onc (SA) in 2001, PG Dip Pal Med in 2016 and MPhil Pal Med in 2023. She is a founding member of PALPRAC and has contributed to various South African palliative care guidelines. She has worked to advocate for palliative care services in KZN as part of the Department of Health provincial and district palliative care task teams. Currently she practises as a palliative oncologist in Durban in the state and hospice sectors. Colleen is also involved in palliative care teaching. Her focus is on supporting holistic patient- and family-centred care, and in particular how to facilitate coping and to maintain realistic hope in the face of life-threatening illness.
