This 60-minute on-demand webinar explores the role of palliative care in patients with severe burns, particularly when curative surgical options become limited or are no longer achievable.


Using case-based multidisciplinary discussions, the session considers key clinical, ethical and psychosocial aspects of severe burn care, including symptom control, prognostication, communication with families, decision-making around ongoing intervention, and support for comfort, dignity and person-centred care.

We support healthcare professionals to be change agents in their own settings, and we engage with the wider health system to drive the changes needed to ensure everyone has access to quality palliative care. Dr Julia Ambler
Palliative Care Practitioner
Short bio: Dr Ambler has worked in paediatric palliative care for 20 years, first in Oxford and then in Durban. She co-founded Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children, where she is Clinical Director, and facilitated this PalliCHAT discussion on severe burns and palliative care.
Dr Nikki Allorto
Specialist Surgeon
Short bio: A specialist surgeon and burn surgeon based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. She is President of the South African Burns Society, Founder of the Burn Care Trust, and leads the Pietermaritzburg burn service in a resource-constrained public sector setting.
Dr Hettie le Roux
Paediatric Surgery Registrar
Short bio: A paediatric surgery registrar at the University of Pretoria, with clinical experience across the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng. Her clinical work includes significant experience in the care of children with burn injuries, and she has served on the South African Burn Society Executive Committee.
Cassidy-Mae Shaw
Clinical Psychologist
Short bio: A Principal Clinical Psychologist at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. Her work focuses on the psychological and psychosocial dimensions of complex medical conditions, including chronic pain, disfigurement, uncertainty, family distress and multidisciplinary care.
