Mental Health Toolkit Overview

The Mental Health Toolkit is designed for primary care clinicians seeking advanced knowledge and practical skills in mental health care. The Toolkit aims to develop your skills in recognising and managing a range of mental health conditions within primary care.

The Toolkit consists of 13 stand-alone modules, each requiring less than 1 hour to complete and accredited for 2 CPD points with the HPCSA. Each module in the Toolkit is crafted to be clear and concise, delivering practical, ready-to-use guidelines that empower professionals to make an immediate impact in their practice.

You have the flexibility to complete the modules in any order or follow them in sequence for a more comprehensive understanding. Whether you want to focus on specific topics or cover the full spectrum of mental health conditions, the Toolkit adapts to your needs and pace. This flexible approach allows you to work through the Toolkit at your own pace, making it easy to integrate valuable mental health insights into your daily practice—whenever and wherever it suits you.

Each module ends with a 5-question quiz that requires 70% to pass. To complete the module and obtain a completion certificate, you must work through all of the content and pass the quiz.

Module 10: Substance Use Disorders

This module focusses on the identification and management of substance use disorders. At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of substance use disorders.
Recall evidence-based care for substance use disorders.

Module 1 Principles of Mental Health in Primary Care

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Describe the principles of mental health in primary care.
Utilise available support networks, helplines, and referral pathways for patients and families.
Discuss effective communication strategies to support patient engagement and partnership.

Module 2 Suicide Risk Assessment and Management

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess risk factors related to suicide, aggression, and self-harm.
Describe initial and ongoing management of suicide risk.

Module 3 Aggressive and Disruptive Behaviour

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess risk factors related to aggression and disruptive behaviour.
Describe initial and ongoing management of aggression and disruptive behaviour.

Module 4 Delirium Recognition and Acute Management

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess risk factors related to delirium.
Describe initial and ongoing management of acute presentations such as delirium and psychosis.

Module 5 Anxiety Disorders in Primary Care

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of anxiety disorders.
Recall evidence-based care for anxiety disorders.

Module 6 Depression – Recognition and Management

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of depression.
Recall evidence-based care for depression.

Module 7 Trauma-related Disorders (Acute Stress and PTSD)

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of trauma-related disorders.
Recall evidence-based care for trauma related disorders.

Module 8 Psychotic Disorders

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of psychotic disorders.
Describe initial and ongoing management of acute presentations such as delirium and psychosis.

Module 9 Bipolar Mood Disorders

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of bipolar mood disorders.
Recall evidence-based care for bipolar disorder.

Module 10 Substance Use Disorders

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Identify and assess the symptoms and presentation of bipolar mood disorders.
Recall evidence-based care for bipolar disorder.

Module 11 Maternal Mental Health

Estimated time: 30 min

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

Module 12 The Mental Health Care Act – Legal and Ethical Practice

Describe the principles of the Mental Health Care Act and its application in clinical practice.

Module 13 Psychiatric Medication Management
