Course overview
Infection prevention and control (IPC) is aimed at providing a safe healthcare environment for patients and staff. This 30 hour short course has been developed as a response to improve health outcomes and prevent morbidity, mortality and to decrease healthcare costs and possible litigation.
The course is specially aimed at healthcare workers working in healthcare facilities and in the community. The purpose of the training is to outline a strategic framework to prevent, reduce and control the development of infections including hospital-acquired infections and anti-microbial resistance, by improving patient safety and health outcomes.
After completing the course participants will be able to describe different microorganisms, explain the chain of infection, explain standard precautions for infection prevention and control, understand waste management in healthcare, and discuss environmental controls. The course includes 5 modules and learning is assessed through modular quizzes. The course is accredited for 30 CPD points with the HPCSA.
