Course overview
Skin disease is one of the most common reasons patients seek help in South African primary care, yet many conditions are under‑recognised, misdiagnosed, or treated late—especially in a diverse population where presentations vary across skin tones, age groups, and comorbidities. Introduction to Dermatology equips healthcare professionals with the essential skills to confidently assess and manage skin complaints, enabling earlier detection of serious conditions and more person‑centred care.
Across three practical modules, you’ll learn to identify key morphological features, take a focused dermatological history, and interpret patterns that guide accurate diagnosis. The course builds your competence in differentiating common inflammatory, infectious, parasitic, pigmentary, and neoplastic skin conditions, with strong emphasis on recognising red flags and early signs of melanoma and non‑melanoma skin cancers. You’ll also explore dermatology in special populations, including people living with HIV, and develop an evidence‑based approach to investigations, topical and systemic therapies, and safe prescribing in resource‑variable settings.
By the end, you will be able to provide culturally sensitive patient education, make appropriate referral decisions, and manage common dermatological presentations with confidence. The course offers approximately 16 hours of learning and is fully accredited for 16 HPCSA CPD points, with a quiz at the end of each module to assess competence.
