Why choose this course?
The course comprises six practical modules covering the full spectrum of outpatient Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) management tailored for the South African healthcare setting. It begins with an overview of AUD’s prevalence, diagnostic criteria, and neurobiology, followed by structured guidance on screening tools and brief interventions (SBIRT). It then details criteria and protocols for outpatient withdrawal management, introduces first- and second-line pharmacotherapies (e.g., naltrexone, acamprosate, gabapentin), and emphasizes the importance of psychosocial support and relapse prevention strategies. The final module tackles local barriers to treatment—such as stigma, limited services, and systemic challenges—and offers realistic, culturally appropriate solutions. This course is ideal for general practitioners who want to confidently treat AUD in primary care, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to reducing the public health burden of alcohol-related harm in their communities
