Course overview

Many healthcare providers do not wish to consider what good end-of-life care looks like. After all, you entered your profession to heal people, not to help them die. Nevertheless, children do die and their suffering at the end of life is real and can and should be well managed. This course will help enhance the ability to provide compassionate and appropriate care to a child at the end of life and ensure that the dying child’s worst experience for a family is handled with the greatest possible compassion so that after the child has died, they are not left with unanswered questions, regrets and feelings of not doing all they could to reduce their suffering, both physical and psychosocial.

The End-of-Life Care for Children course covers the following key elements:
  • The difference between end-of-life care and terminal care.
  • The benefits of providing good end-of-life care for a child and their family.
  • Providing culturally sensitive care at the end of life.
  • How a child’s understanding of illness and death changes and develops according to their age and stage of development.
  • Tools to undertake the process of advance care planning.
  • Managing pain and distressing symptoms likely to occur when a child is dying,
  • The physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the dying child.
  • Supporting the family at the time of a child’s death and afterwards.
  • The importance and value of memory work and legacy planning.

Student testimonials

“The course was excellent. It is a must for every health care provider, not just those working in paediatrics or palliative care. It was easy to navigate, very well thought of, had an appropriate use of resources and was thoroughly engaging. Even though I do this every day, I learned quite a lot and I really enjoyed doing it. It was very thought provoking and had a lot of information that I thought I could use in everyday situations, particularly with families. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

How incredibly beneficial it would be for every child with a life-limiting or life-threatening disease, if this course was recognized by SANC, or imagine if you first had to do the course to qualify to work in any form of paediatric environment? We would have more kind, caring, empathetic and compassionate staff to love on those trying their best not to break!"
- Thandi Tshabalala
Nurse
What a pleasure this has been. I am so extremely thankful for the wonderful opportunity that PATCH has offered me to partake in this amazing life-changing journey! I didn't know much about Disease Trajectories, proper Advanced Care planning, managing distressing symptoms etc. I gained a wealth of knowledge right over all and each aspect of this intensive course.
