Course overview
Poisoning and envenomation remain critical medical emergencies requiring swift, informed clinical responses. The Short Course in Emergency Toxicology and Venomology is designed for healthcare professionals who want to build confidence and competence in managing toxicological and venom-related emergencies, particularly within the South African context. This online course offers a practical, case-based learning experience that addresses both common and life-threatening exposures—from pharmaceutical overdoses and hazardous substances to bites and stings from venomous creatures.
Spanning five focused modules, the course equips you to apply a general management approach to poisoned or envenomated patients. You’ll learn to recognise key toxidromes, apply commonly used antidotes, and select appropriate decontamination strategies. Special attention is given to managing poisoning from important medications, drugs of abuse, and toxic industrial agents such as pesticides and heavy metals. You’ll also gain a deep understanding of venomous animal bites, poisonous plants, and mushroom exposures, including antivenom use and symptom onset timing as a diagnostic tool.
With approximately 19 notional hours of content, the course is flexible and fully online, allowing you to learn at your own pace. Your knowledge will be assessed through a comprehensive quiz at the end of the course. Upon completion, you’ll be well-prepared to provide safe, timely, and effective care to patients facing toxicological or envenomation emergencies.
