Course Overview
Inside the World of EMS is an engaging and informative micro-course designed to demystify the structure and scope of Emergency Medical Services in South Africa. Through concise modules and real-world context, this course offers learners a foundational understanding of the different tiers of EMS providers from Basic Ambulance Assistants to Emergency Care Practitioners, including their training, capabilities, limitations and supervision requirements.
The course explores how the South African EMS system is structured, the evolution from short courses to formal, university-based qualifications, and what each level of provider is legally permitted to do. Learners will gain practical insights into how EMS teams function in dynamic, resource-limited environments, how supervision is managed in the field and how hospital and pre-hospital teams can collaborate more effectively through structured communication and mutual respect.
Special attention is given to how EMS interacts with other parts of the healthcare system, the critical role of supervision, the importance of understanding the scope of practice and the real-world challenges EMS providers face daily, from safety risks to systemic resource shortages. By the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the different EMS provider levels and their scope of practice. Identify the structure of the South African EMS system and its evolving qualification pathways. Clarify appropriate expectations during handovers between EMS and hospital teams.
