This short course introduces healthcare professionals to the diagnosis and management of common and chronic bacterial skin infections, with a focus on presentations in darker skin types and resource-limited African settings. Participants will learn how to identify, differentiate, and treat conditions such as impetigo, cellulitis, folliculitis, leprosy, and more. Emphasis is placed on recognising clinical patterns in melanin-rich skin, avoiding common diagnostic pitfalls, and applying appropriate antimicrobial strategies in primary care environments.

This course is based on content from Dermatology: A Comprehensive Handbook for Africa, a locally authored clinical resource developed specifically for the diagnosis and management of skin conditions in African settings.

Prof Ncoza Dlova is Head of Dermatology and Full Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and the first African Dean in the 73-year history of its Medical School. An internationally recognised dermatologist with over 135 publications, she is a B-rated NRF researcher and a leading authority on ethnic skin and hair, global health, and medical education. Prof Dlova serves on multiple international boards, including the ILDS as its first fully elected African representative, and has received numerous prestigious awards for her contributions to dermatology and health.
Anisa Mosam
MBChB, MMed, FCDerm, PhD. SA
Prof. Anisa Mosam is an Associate Professor and Principal Specialist in Dermatology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She holds an MBChB, FC Derm (SA), MMed (Derm), and PhD, and is a C2 NRF-rated researcher. Her clinical and research expertise spans HIV-associated skin conditions, Kaposi’s sarcoma, atopic dermatitis, and global dermatology. She has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, contributed to textbooks, and supervises postgraduate research. Prof. Mosam is actively involved in international collaborations and clinical trials, advancing dermatology in Africa and beyond.
