Course overview
This course equips healthcare professionals, counsellors, and community health workers with the knowledge and practical skills to support antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among people living with HIV. You’ll learn about counselling competencies—empathy, active listening, motivational interviewing, and cross‑cultural communication—while learning to navigate common challenges such as stigma, disclosure, and personal boundaries.
The course guides you through adherence across the treatment journey (pretreatment, initiation, and maintenance), and shows you how to use practical tools like pill counts, treatment diaries, dosing anchors, and reminder systems alongside enhanced support strategies, including adherence clubs, home/DOT visits, and integrated care models.
The course requires approximately 8 hours to complete, and learning is assessed via short modular quizzes and an end-of-course quiz. Accredited with the HPCSA for 8 general CPD points.
