Course overview

In emergency and critical care, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) relies on a timely, coordinated response; and that response begins with two core skills: interpreting life-threatening ECG rhythms and administering appropriate pharmacological interventions.

A Rhythmic Reckoning is a focused, pre-ACLS course designed to provide healthcare providers with a solid foundation in the essential components of ACLS care. Whether you're preparing to attend an ACLS course for the first time or seeking a targeted refresher, this course strengthens your understanding of both the electrical and pharmacological tools used in resuscitation.
The course begins with a practical overview of basic pharmacology in the context of cardiac arrest and peri-arrest care. Learners explore key drug classes, including adrenaline, amiodarone, atropine, adenosine, and more, with a focus on their mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, and appropriate dosing during cardiac emergencies. The section also explores how patient-specific factors (age, comorbidities, metabolism, and genetics) influence drug responses, helping clinicians make safe, informed decisions in high-pressure scenarios.
The second component focuses on ECG rhythm recognition specific to ACLS protocols. Rather than attempting to cover every possible cardiac rhythm, this section hones in on the ones that matter most during resuscitation: ventricular fibrillation, pulseless ventricular tachycardia, asystole, pulseless electrical activity (PEA), symptomatic bradycardia, and tachyarrhythmias requiring immediate intervention. Learners are guided through practical interpretation strategies, rhythm strip analysis, and the correlation of ECG findings with appropriate interventions (defibrillation, pacing, drug therapy).

Throughout the course, clinical context is prioritised:
  • When to shock (and when not to)
  • Which drug to reach for, and why
  • How to think like a resuscitation team member

By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident recognising ACLS-relevant ECG rhythms, understanding when and how to use key drugs, and participating in team-based resuscitation with greater clarity and competence.
